The Governor Nasir El-Rufai has led Kaduna’s recovery from the Great Recession created by the previous administration to a position of national economic prominence. His unwavering focus on economic development includes attracting businesses and investment to the state while helping homegrown businesses flourish.
His Excellency, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was born in 1960 in Faskari LGA of Katsina State. He attended LEA Kawo for his primary education. The incumbent governor then attended the prestigious Barewa College where he graduated top of his class after winning the valuable BOBA “Academic Achievement Trophy” in 1976. He then obtained a Quantity Surveying degree with First Class Honors. He established and successfully ran a Project Management Consulting firm from 1982 to 1988 with his partners, handling civil engineering projects across Nigeria.
After that, he attended various post-graduate and professional programs in Harvard University, Georgetown University and the University of London. An MBA in 1984, a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science (1985), a Bachelor of Laws (2008) and several programs on Privatization, Leadership and Management. He also held management positions in two international telecommunications companies, AT&T Network Systems International BV and Motorola, Inc.
He was the Director General of Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), in charge of the privatization of government assets from 1999-2003. The success he achieved at BPE compelled President Obasanjo to nominate and appoint him as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2003 to 2007. He was also a key member of the influential economic team of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a member of the Federal Executive Council, the highest decision making body in Nigeria.
He was Chairman of the Renewal Committee of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and was instrumental in the Merger Committee that formed into the All Progressive Congress (APC), of which he served as the pioneer Deputy National Secretary. Since the inception of the APC, he has also served as a Secretary and a member of the Strategic Committee and the Election Planning Committee. He is a key of ally of the President Muhammadu Buhari and was recently appointed as a member of the 5-man ad-hoc of the National Economic Council investigating the Nigerian National Petroleum Council (NNPC). In October 2001, he was conferred a national honor, OFR (Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) and was conferred a D.Sc. (honoris causa) by the University of Abuja, Nigeria.
